The lands of Ground Zero features vast shifts and changes in terrain. It is bordered by a set of mountains to the East and a large lake and river to the West. These two features effectively help to separate it from seemingly the rest of the world. Many see it has salvation or doom for this very reason. The more Northern area is lush with life. It features a heavily wooded area and plenty of plant-life. The terrain here is more of a wetlands with heavy rainfall and flooding of the river leaving large portions of it submerged. There are higher elevated areas closer to the base of the mountains where it is free from flooding, however. In the more marsh-like areas the ground is sodden with water and the mud thick. For many it is harder to navigate here without getting wet or needing to swim.
It is in the North portion where the Labyrinth resides. The entrance is nested near the base of the mountains where it expands into a vast system of tunnels and passages. No one is sure how it came to be, but many believe it was once the location of a mine to the humans. The true history has long been forgotten, but countless generations spent their energy expanding and digging out tunnels further to call it home.
To the South the land shifts into charred earth and jagged terrain. A few trees dot the area, but become more scarce the further South one ventures. There is very little cover, leaving those who visit here vulnerable. It seems as if foliage and life here is non existent and one would almost be correct in assuming so. To one familiar with the terrain they will find life hidden away in little alcoves among the charred remains and rock formations. It seems as if gradually the lands here have been healing, though slowly. The only real prominent form of plant-life out in the open is moss and low lying shrubs and ferns. The bioluminescent, cream mushrooms specific to the lands of Ground Zero seem to flourish here, however.
Along the Southern portion of the mountains is where the Chasm is located. It is nestled among a series of steep canyons and cliffs. This in itself makes it hard to venture into and one would get easily lost if unguided by those familiar with the area. Among the canyons and cliffs are small pockets of water seeping from the ground and collecting from the rain. Life around these small pools is plentiful, with various growth of foliage. The water here is rich with minerals giving in a rust color that when disturbed glows a vibrant red with bioluminescent algae blooms.
One would often wonder why the lands to the South are so decayed and ashen. To the far South of Ground Zero is where the laboratory that created and preformed experiments for the plague originated. A bomb was dropped by the government in a final, futile attempt to save humanity. The blast from the explosion radiate outward for miles, causing fires and damage to the surrounding lands. If one would travel far South, beyond the reaches of the Plague Lands one would find the destruction there immeasurable. Nothing but a crater remains of the laboratory that once stood there.
